Setting up AI Companion

Get your AI Companion up and running in just a few minutes. Follow this step-by-step guide to configure your AI-powered reply assistant.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • An active SupportRetriever form
  • An account with an AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Grok, or Gemini)
  • An API key from your chosen provider

Accessing AI Companion Settings

  1. Log in to your SupportRetriever dashboard
  2. Navigate to AI Companion from the settings menu or visit /ai-companion
  3. Click Get Started to begin the setup wizard

Step 1: Name Your Companion

Give your AI assistant a friendly name

Choose a friendly name like Alfred, Jarvis, or whatever sounds good for you

Give your AI assistant a name. This name will appear in the conversation view when suggestions are displayed. The default name is "Alfred," but you can choose any name you prefer.

  • Enter a name (up to 50 characters)
  • Click Continue to proceed

Select your AI provider and enter your API key:

  1. Choose a provider - Click on OpenAI, Claude, Grok, or Gemini
  2. Get your API key - Links are provided to each provider's console:
  3. Enter your API key - Paste it into the API key field
Security Note: Your API key will be encrypted and stored securely. We'll never share it with anyone.
Billing Note: You'll be billed separately by your AI provider for API usage. We recommend setting up usage alerts in your provider account to monitor spending.

Step 3: Add Knowledge Base (Optional)

Connect your documentation or FAQ site to help AI Companion provide more accurate, context-aware responses:

  1. Enter your knowledge base URL - For example: https://docs.example.com
  2. How it works - AI Companion will search your knowledge base when generating suggestions
  3. Skip if not needed - You can always add this later

This helps your AI companion provide context-aware responses based on your documentation

Step 4: Review & Activate

Review your configuration before activating:

  • AI Name - The name that will appear in suggestions
  • Provider - Your chosen AI provider
  • API Key - Preview of your encrypted key
  • Knowledge Base - Your documentation URL (if provided)
  • Status - Enable or disable toggle

Click Save & Activate to complete setup. Your AI Companion will start generating suggestions automatically when customers send messages.

After Setup

Once configured, AI Companion will:

  • Automatically generate suggestions when customers send messages
  • Display suggestions in your conversation view
  • Wait for your approval before sending anything

You can always return to AI Companion settings to:

  • Edit your configuration
  • Change providers or update API keys
  • Modify knowledge base URL
  • Enable or disable AI Companion
  • Delete your configuration

Troubleshooting Setup

API Key Not Working

  • Verify the key is correct (no extra spaces)
  • Check that your provider account is active
  • Ensure you have sufficient credits/quota
  • Try generating a new API key

Knowledge Base Not Found

  • Verify the URL is accessible publicly
  • Check that the domain is correct
  • Ensure your documentation site is indexed by search engines

Suggestions Not Appearing

  • Verify AI Companion is enabled (toggle in settings)
  • Check that the last message is from a customer
  • Review your API key validity
  • Check provider account status and billing
